In 1965, fourteen families established a Catholic Church in Livingston, Texas and the American Legion Post 312 offered their facility for their services. Their dream was to provide a church where the Catholic families in the Livingston area could worship and practice their faith as a Catholic Community. The fourteen believed that with God's help, their faith, hard work and determination, their dream could come true.
In 1970 five acres of land on the corner of Highway 190 West and FM 350 North was purchased for $10,000.00. The Beaumont Diocese donated the old Woodville Catholic Church building and was moved to the church property in Livingston. In June 1970, St. Joseph Catholic Church of Livingston became a Mission. Bishop Vincent Harris blessed the Church on September 20.1970. A census was taken on July 4, 1971 and the Church family had grown to 131 people.
The year of 1973 began a flurry of remodeling and additions to the church property. A parish hall and priest quarters were built and added to the current church building, which was called the annex. This increased the seating to 220 people for Mass celebrations. On September 18, 1981, St. Joseph was officially declared a Parish and the church census indicated that there were 200 registered families. In 1982, a new rectory was completed.
The parish was rich with French, Slavic and Italian cultures but by 1983, there was an emergence of Hispanic population making up 36% of the parish. Growth continued and a new Family Center was built which was comprised of six classrooms and a large hall capable of seating 300-400 people. In 1989, the need arose to use the Family Center for the celebration of Mass.
In October 2000 ground breaking was celebrated for the new Church building and a year later, October 7, 2001 the parish community came together as one family with many roots as Bishop Curtis Guillory, S.V.D. blessed and dedicated our new Sanctuary.
Over the years, St. Joseph Catholic Church has grown from fourteen families to a community of over 550 families. St. Joseph has served fewer than five Bishops, thirteen Priests and three Deacons. On August 2, 2002 Father Clifton Labbe, S.V.D. became the pastor until June 30, 2016, when Father Tarsisius Puling SVD took over his post. On June 29, 2022, Fr. Anderson De Souza SVD became the pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church with the help of Fr. Dilip Soreng SVD, as the associate pastor, until as of December 1, 2022, Fr. Dilip was reassigned and his position was filled by Fr. Bartlomiej Jasilek, SVD. On August 1, 2023, Fr. Paul Kahan, SVD was named pastor of the St. Joseph and St. Martin Parishes.
The church has embraced the leadership and support of the three Bishops, thirteen priests and three Deacons. With the blessings and love of the Heavenly Father and the dreams and initiative of its parishioners, St Joseph Catholic Church will continue to grow and serve as a Christian, faith community in Livingston, Texas.
